Newport Linen brings out the best of both worlds. The delicate balance between seemingly contradictory elements is exemplified in Newport Linen. It is modern, yet classic . . . elegant, yet restrained . . . earthy, yet refined. Its versatility makes it perfect for both heirloom linens and contemporary designs. Newport Linen is spun and dyed to Halcyon Yarn's specifications. Special attention to weight, twist, fiber, color, and spinning method, result in a truly unique yarn. The use of flax line, the long continuous flax fibers, creates a satiny-smooth finish with a subtle glow. In addition, the flax line is dry spun rather than wet to retain the natural, fibery look of linen.

Weavers: The 16/2 weight is so versatile that we can recommend a wide range of warp setts, and a very wide range of uses. A linen warp with a linen weft produces beautiful table lines and thirsty dish towels. For added softness try a cotton weft such as Homestead Cotton (Item 152). Blends like Cottolin (Item 35) and Block Island Blend (Item 99) work well in combination with Newport Linen. If you like to play with texture, blend with Taffy (Item 86) or any of our other novelty textured yarns. Plan on very little shrinkage in washing. Remember, linen will not expand or compress appreciably in the weave, so your warp sett and the tightness of your weave will be the main factors in the texture of your finished product, not fulling. Also, try wetting your linen weft before weaving (simply soak your pre-wound bobbins in water). This technique can help the weft conform more easily to the weave structure because the moisture makes linen yarn more pliable. You may want to dampen the warp also.

Knitters should try the Newport for summery knitted lace tops and intricate lace table linens. You will probably have to play with needle size to be sure of gauge. You can also multistrand for heavier weight garments or for making market bags.

Care - Hand or machine wash. Sample, especially when using conrasting colors, to ensure colorfastness. It is not uncommon for excess dye to be a problem in darker colors. If bleeding occurs, skein the yarn and wash it until the water runs clear. Hang the skein unitl dry.
